The Dark Arts Review #13

Before I begin can I send a shot out to the reader from Jordan?

And so we begin. This week’s film is the James Toback documentary Tyson. Bet you can’t guess what it’s about.

"You're sweet. I'm going to make sure you kiss me good with those big lips. I'm gonna make you my girlfriend."

Ah Mike Tyson, one time poster boy for New York city. A chubby pre teen street thug turned world boxing champ. His story was what America is all about. The rags to riches, Manifest destiny, the dream turned into reality.

Although boxing is in decline, to achieve what he did was no mean feat. He turned a sport that was littered with bums into something exciting. His ability to knock people out in the early rounds made his fights a huge box office draw.

Then came the scandals, beating up Don “convicted murderer” King, the rape conviction, biting off the ear of Evander Holyfield and being married to the devil woman Robin Givens. Seriously that woman is synonymous with money grabbing whores.

This documentary came about due to the film Black and White (a horrible film about white people being enthralled with black culture). Mike Tyson plays himself and Robert Downey Jr. hits on him. Mike said that he was close to punching out his lights since it wasn’t in the script. Either way it is a interesting watch. Tyson doesn’t redeem himself but you do realise what it took for him to be such a savage in the ring.

He manipulated his rage in order to become a beast in the ring. Unfortunately that spilled out and became a part of life. His voracious appetite for women didn’t help either. He blames all his losses on being out of shape unfocused and well look at the picture below.

This is a great watch, I highly recommend it if you like sports. To see the mentality of a champion self destruct is addictive. Tyson is quite forthcoming in the film, although please realise that this is a documentary not the news. This is not fair and balanced; this is Tyson’s story in his own words. This is an extreme man.

"I'm just a dark guy from a den of iniquity. A dark shadowy figure from the bowels of iniquity. I wish I could be Mike who gets an endorsement deal. But you can't make a lie and a truth go together. This country wasn't built on moral fiber. This country was built on rape, slavery, murder, degradation and affiliation with crime."
