The Dark Arts Review #4

This week's film is a little off the beaten track. Steak is a 2007 French Canadian film directed by Quentin Dupieux. Although this is his second full length film, his first was not released, he masterfully creates a visual feast of what the near future will look like. The film is set in canada in 2016, a time were beauty is everything. People are desperate to get facelifts and will stop at nothing to get them. The film is a satire of human desire and the need to be cool. It demonstrates the world we live in if we follow Paris Hilton and her ilk and miss out on even simple things such as friendship. Sounds flaky right? Well this is the odd thing. It is an arthouse film, even pretentious in places, but it has it's heart in the right place. Here is the kicker though. This film has one of the best soundtracks of all time. Composed by Four French electro wizards, each providing a little splash of eccentricity to the film.
Kavinsky - makes 80's futuristic music
Tellier - handles the emotional songs
- Swirling electro
Mr Oizo - ambient trance?
Oh and did i mention that it was filmed by Mr Oizo? aka the dude that did Flat Beat?

  1. It's not the best film in the World that's for sure, but it does have some quirky bits, I love the game they play with the cricket bats! Georges scarily looks like Michael Jackson near the end too!

  2. I agree with you about the game with the cricket bats. probably the best thing in the film. I guess jackson is a great reference point for the film.
    cheers Eye Shot

  3. Think I have to see this film now. Will try and search it out sometime, sounds interesting.
